The ship had shown up a couple of days before, and Lydia was pretty sure Killian had mostly spent that time acquainting himself with it in that time. She thought it was half a wonder he'd come off of it to tell anyone (ie. her) about it at all. Or to eat or sleep, for that matter. Though, she reasoned afterward, there was probably space enough to sleep on it, and maybe food somewhere.
She wouldn't really want to test the theory, though, nor eat whatever was hanging out on a pirate ship.
But she had to grant that it was a really nice boat as she stared at it from the docks, head tipped slightly. Finally, she dragged her gaze away from it and over to its captain, a smirk curving her lips. "So. Going to give me the tour?"
He doesn't know how the ship got here, or why it's here, but it's here, and he covered every inch in his examination of it. She's exactly the same as she was before Blackbeard got his grubby hands on her. Everything is exactly where it should be.
There is in fact somewhere to sleep on it, for an entire crew, and even some food, though he hasn't really missed that part of it.
"Of course. How much do you know about ships?" There's no point in repeating things she already knows.
"I know enough, and what I don't know, I can always figure out," she tells him mildly, flipping a loose lock of hair out of her face before reaching up to draw all of her hair into a messy, elegant bun. All the better to keep it out of her face if she's going to go on a ship. She's pretty sure a ship is no place for someone dressed like she is, but she'll make do.
"Let's start with the deck then, since that's where we are, and work our way down." That seems to make the most sense to him. "You can see the masts, square-rigged, and the wheel for navigating. Access to the rest of the ship is, obviously, from the hatches on this deck."
"Sounds good," she laughs a little, happy to glance around as he mentioned things, studying and memorising to the best of her ability. If only the basics stuck with her, then that'd be progress; boats weren't usually something she cared about. "I assume the hatches have stairs? Or only ladders?"
When Claire had dreamed about escaping The City, she hadn't thought it would turn out quite like this. Standing by the railing at the front of a very large ship, she stared out at the water with a little smile on her face. It had been a long time since she had been out in the water, way back in Haurvatat actually, but it had been nothing like this.
Hearing the familiar click of boots behind her, she turned to watch Hook approach while her smile grew. "I can see why you love it now. Being out on a boat like this? It's amazing."
Everything he had heard about leaving the City had been that it wasn't possible to leave this way. Try and sail away and you'd end up right back where you started, according to everything that he'd heard. So it shouldn't be possible for them to be here doing this; but he's definitely not going to complain too much. In fact, his only complaint would be that this isn't his beloved Jolly Roger.
Still, maybe they can find a way back to a world that has her in it.
"Wait until we really get going. Then you'll see the freedom a vessel like this can give you, to go wherever you like, whenever you like."
"I believe you." She told him with a warm smile before looking out at the horizon where it was only water for as far as she could see. Nothing but water and the sky growing darker as night loomed ahead of them. Somehow it just made everything beautiful to her and she had to wonder if it was the freedom that made it that way.
"I should probably worry that this is some kind of illusion and that we're not actually escaping but I can't bring myself to care right now." She added a moment later, wrapping her arms around herself as she glanced over at him again. "I hope it lasts for a good while if it is an illusion."
"We're out farther than anyone has ever gotten when trying to leave this way." He's talked to the sailors. He knows. "I don't know how, but we're on our way out of the City." Maybe this is how it chose to let them leave, rather than some other way.
"There's a shoreline not far from here." He'd seen it from his perch in the crow's nest. "We'll anchor in the lee of it for tonight."
Claire looks over her shoulder to watch the sailors for a moment while listening to Killian. There is a jovial feeling as they move about doing their tasks, most likely because they are happy to escape as well.
"Sounds good to me." She smiles at Killian again, winking playfully. "I'm following your lead, Captain."
[Typically, if he's not in the same place as everyone else and someone wanted to find him, their best chance would be to head for the harbor. It's where he spends most of his time, it's where his ship is, it's where he's even been known to stay when he had nowhere else to go. The smell of the salt air has always been a reliable way of clearing his head.
As much as he wants to spend every waking moment (and a good number of the ones where he's not awake, too) with Emma, having just returned from the Underworld has left him with a lot of things that need clearing from his head. Memories of those he thought he'd never see again, and those he almost got to see again.
They'd all been celebrating at Granny's, now that everyone is back in town where they belong, even if there are more threats out there. There will always be more threats. He'd waited until Emma was surrounded by her family to sneak out on his own, down to the harbor like usual. There's a swing there that he's not sure anyone else has ever even noticed, and anyone who discovers he's missing from the party and comes looking for him will find him there.]
[Of course Emma would notice when Killian disappeared from Granny's. How
couldn't she? A part of her wanting to let him have time to himself and
another part of her wanting nothing more than to go off to find him. She
stays a little bit longer to appease the others before excusing herself.
There was only so much celebrating she could handle anyway.
He was a pirate so, of course, the first place she thought to go was the
harbor. After all, that's where his ship was. What she hadn't expected to
eventually find was a swing that she was pretty sure hadn't been there
before. She'd been down near this part of the harbor countless times, so
she's not sure when that was even put there.]
[It doesn't surprise him much when he hears her voice. After their reunion, it seems to him that she wouldn't want to be far from him for long; he knows how hard it was for him to leave the diner while she was still there.
And now they get time alone, just the two of them and the sea, the first time they've been alone since his return.
He pats the cushioned seat of the swing next to him.]
Emma leaned against the door frame of the nursey, her hands loosely crossed her chest, and a soft smile on her face. Victor had delivered their daughter a week ago and still, it felt like she was going to going to disappear if Emma blinked. It was crazy she knew, but she had honestly never felt this happy before.
"You know we are going to have to stop watching her at some point?"
He comes to stand next to her in the doorway. He'd never thought that he would love anyone as much as he loves Emma, but then their daughter had come along and proved him wrong. He already knows that he'd protect her with his life if he had to.
"Sure. When she's eighteen and we can't keep her here anymore."
They've finally made it to this point. There had been a lot of times where he wondered if they would, for various reasons. Emma's stubbornness, his flirtation with darkness, his death... Then there was the final battle that Emma had to fight, and the possibility that it might be her death that ruined their happiness this time.
But it didn't, and they're both here, and they're married. The celebrating had finally died down, Henry had headed off to spend a couple of nights with Regina, and they have the house to themselves.
"How does it feel not to have to be the savior anymore, love?"
Honestly, Emma wasn't sure how to answer that question. Being the savior had been such a big part of her life. Now she had a chance to figure out who she was, who she wanted to be.
"I guess it hasn't quite hit me yet." She told him. And obviously she would always be there for her family and others when she was needed. But it was nice to get her happy ending, or rather...a happy beginning with Killian.
"How does it feel now that I've made an honest man out of you?" She grinned at him wildly.
"Now you can figure out what you want to be next." Something she actually wants to be, instead of something that she is because of being born that way.
"I've never been an honest man before." He had been a naive officer in the king's navy, many lifetimes ago, but that hardly counts in this case. "I'm glad it was you who managed it."
"I expect it will be the best day of my life." It's not over yet. It can get better. He takes hold of her hand and pulls her closer to him so he can slide his arm around her waist. "That dress doesn't look very comfortable. You wouldn't need any help getting out of it, would you?"
Somehow, he knows. Not everything, of course. It's not like he and Emma spend absolutely every second together. But he just knows, anyway, that there's something on her mind, because they're here and others are not and why would there not be something on her mind?
He's been giving her some space, because he knows that sometimes she wants it. Sometimes he wants it, so he understands her need for it. But he's also been figuring out lately that he's better when he's not alone, and he hopes that Emma won't say no to a little company.
It doesn't take him long to find her. She's predictable in ways she maybe doesn't even realize. Just like when his mind is in turmoil he turns to the sea, when hers is that way she turns to public spaces large enough where she can be alone and yet not at the same time. Such as parks like the one where he eventually finds her. He should have figured it out sooner. Henry's not here. Who else would be on her mind right now? Where else to look but somewhere known for families?
It's just one of those afternoons where the absence of Henry and her parents and even Regina weighs too heavily on her mind for calmly sipping cocoa at a diner waiting for something interesting to do. So instead of sitting at the diner with her cocoa and cinnamon, she paid for a thermos of it and went looking for somewhere Henry would feel close.
She should probably have realized before she got there that she was in search of a playground. That damned castle slide Regina tore down, is forever tangled with her son in her mind. The swing she settles in when the families move on is less about Henry and more about time. About the gentle back and forth of moving without going anywhere, and the childhood she had but wasn't the one she wanted.
Her feet only lightly scrape the sand beneath them, and there's nowhere near enough noise to drown out the approach of footsteps she knows as well as her own. She doesn't turn though, because sometimes, just sometimes, it's easier to let him come before she looks into those ridiculously blue eyes.
"You're early. I wasn't expecting you for, oh--" Now she looks, feeds the concern in his eyes with a fragile half smile. "Fifteen minutes yet."
"I wasn't busy. I have absolutely nowhere better to be right now." Anytime, no matter what. If she needs him, he'll be there. Even if she doesn't know that she needs him, he'll be there.
And maybe he just wanted to see her.
He shoves his hand into the pocket of his pants as he stops next to her swing. "You miss him, don't you?"
