He doesn't know who threw the first punch or what started the argument that led up to the round of fisticuffs; all he does know is that he needs to break it up and as fast as he can manage before Erik decides to put this guy down. At the moment, he's still figuring out the how of that situation.
Some moronic human, spewing anti-mutant garbage and nursing a bloody nose is charging forward, headed straight for Erik, but Kurt's far quicker. (Thankfully, for the idiot, in this case.) He lunges between the man and his fellow mutant, locking one arm around Erik's waist and the other around his shoulders. There's a loud BAMF and the two of them vanish in a puff of smoke, leaving the protester to grasp at nothing but lingering midnight-colored vapor.
When they reappear, it's as far away as he can manage, which is somewhat of a stretch for his three mile limit, although he doesn't seem to care about the dizziness that washes over him and suddenly makes him weak in the knees. No, what he wants to know is--
Whether or not he's alright isn't really the issue here. Not in Erik's mind, anyway; it's been a long time since anyone was able to hurt him in any substantial way. Certainly no human who's not wielding polymer bullets could do him much harm.
"I'm fine."
The issue here is the humans who think that it's okay to act that way about mutants.
It's a simple question, only mildly threatening with added emphasis by his arms gripping Erik in a more firm embrace. He's relieved that the other man is okay, but can't help wondering what could have happened if the person had been able to do more damage than necessary.
"I know that he said some pretty slanderous things, but you must learn to choose your battles more wisely. We don't have to fight every single human that attempts to goad us into attacking them to prove their point."
"I don't have a way of traveling as quickly as you do. If he's smart, he'd be gone by the time I got back there." Which isn't a yes, technically. Kurt can take it how he wants.
"Then, for his sake, let's hope he has at least half a brain to know when he should step down." His question hasn't exactly been answered, so he'll faintly loosen his grip, but he's not going to let go.
"If they haven't already learned, what makes you think fighting with one more is going to matter?"
[It's ironic that for all her power over the mind she has no ability to twist her own dreams into something tolerable. Not-so-occasional nightmares, many of which aren't even properly hers have become an unfortunate side effect of her abilities.
This one was really bad, the kind you wake up from in a start and have to wonder if you actually screamed in the real world. There's no easily getting back to sleep after that, so after a few minutes of laying there paralyzed she wraps a blanket around herself and pads to the room next door.
(How convenient that they scored rooms next to each other in the new compound.)
[He's awake already. Of course he is. There's some validity to the stories about twins with a connection, after all, and while he doesn't know specifically what's keeping Wanda up, he knows that she's not sleeping. He's not surprised at all when she knocks on his door.]
[Wanda slips in and doesn't hesitate to make herself at home beside Pietro on the bed, leaning against him. Personal space isn't really a thing for them.]
[She winds her arms around him. There aren't really that many things that legitimately frighten Wanda, so Pietro can probably guess where this is heading.]
[He can probably feel the tension in her muscles. She won't ever forget what almost losing him felt like, and it's not too far of a leap for her brain to extrapolate further.
Wanda will calm down eventually, but it will take a little time. Distractions are good.]
[To Wanda it just feels like she's shifting a little and settling back into him again, even though Pietro's just pulled off the world's fastest grand theft ice cream.]
Chocolate cookie dough? At least some people here have good taste.
[It feels a little like when they used to sneak into the kitchen as kids.]
[Now that the carton's empty, Wanda gestures and scarlet energy obliterates it. Now the only evidence is the spoons, but that's easily taken care of and smuggled back to the kitchen with other dishes.
Wanda feels better for now, but somehow it feels like 'for now' might be the operative term. She wraps her arms around Pietro again, settling close. He's still alive. It was just a nightmare.]
[Of course not. Where's the proof? Sounds a lot like someone else dreamed up that ice cream...]
Hush.
[And with that, she flops back on the bed. It's a performance with no true annoyance behind it, but she doesn't even crack an 'old man' joke this time. It's proof she's still somewhere between rattled and exhausted. The ice cream helped, but it can't make the nightmare go away entirely.]
[The fact that she doesn't make an "old man" joke tells him exactly how troubled she is about this, but he doesn't know what else he can do to make her feel better about it.]
for erik, obvs. :> if this doesn't work, just lemme know.

For Pietro! in an AU where he lives

That trip we took when we were eight. Do you remember? You wanted the ice cream.

I always want ice cream. [She manages a small smile.] But of course I remember.
[And now she's kind of hungry. Whoops.]
...you know, there's ice cream in the kitchen.
