"I think he knows that I do not trust him." Sansa replies unapologetically, not worried about being honest with Petyr since she can't imagine he would betray her. Not now. Plus, she is pretty sure that he has picked up on a few things during his time in Winterfell. "He probably figures that his spot at Jon's side is safer when I'm not around."
"Maybe if I were a man." Yes, the tone is a bit sharp and a lot unlike the Sansa he had first met but things have changed her. She glances over at him with a look that dares him to tell her that she is wrong but they know she isn't. He had pretty much told her that she wouldn't be recognized for the role she played.
"But that's fine." She adds, looking away. "I would rather be here talking about your plans."
He knows better than to underestimate Sansa, particularly after her efforts at clearing his name after Lyssa's death. And what happened to Ramsay Bolton. That makes a difference too.
"You don't mean my plans for the feast." She's not interested in anything so domestic, he's sure. Not with the conversation they're having right now.
"Those should be discussed too at some point but, no, that's not the plans I mean right now." She answers, sitting back as she waits for the carriage to start moving. Yes, she was jumping into discussing them again but this is probably one of the times where they can discuss things without being overheard so easily by a servant or someone else. Plus, she hasn't talked to him about it in weeks.
"Did you mean what you said?" She asks, giving him a sideways glance. "About what you want and see for yourself? All of it?"
Sansa makes a low noise of acknowledgment but chooses to say nothing else as he leans forward to tell the driver to start them on their way. She studies her hands, playing her fingers together like she has a habit of doing whenever she might be nervous or deep in thought. It's easy to tell that she isn't nervous, though.
After awhile, she lifts her head. "It will take time now that winter is here. What are you going to do in the meantime?"
"The best games are those that take so long to play that no one is aware that you are even playing them." Just because winter is almost here, and leaving the Eyrie will be even harder than usual, doesn't mean that he'll be idle. It might even mean that others will get complacent, unaware that he's up to something.
"So you keep telling me." She has to bite back her own impatience and learn to think more like he did. She had started to at one time but everything with Ramsey had left her itching for revenge. Reminding herself that it would only lead to her downfall if she rushes, she draws in a breath and holds it before letting it out slowly.
"So you may trust me a little, enough to tell me that you want me at your side but nothing else?" She looks over at him.
He's been playing this game for longer than she's been alive. It makes sense that she'd be more impatient than he is. She hasn't played a long game yet.
"The first step is to ensure my control over the Vale. Your assistance could be invaluable in that matter."
"We agreed that me coming along on this trip and being there at the feast will do that." She agrees, nodding her head while studying the lines of his face. "A continued allegiance to and with Winterfell will continue to help that as well."
He nods, once, in agreement with what she said. "The winter will be an excellent time to cultivate allies outside of the Vale, as well." Including, especially, at Winterfell. Though he suspects that her feelings on an allegiance between him and the Vale would be different than her brother's.
"If it wouldn't raise so much suspicion and concern, I would suggest staying while you did that." She knows what people would think and say if she stayed at the Eyrie for that long, though. Jon would most definitely have an issue with it and more than likely would send someone to fetch her if it were possible.
Which was laughable considering she was a twice-married woman by now.
"We'll start with just the Vale then." The fact that she's even suggesting staying longer means something, but he also knows that he needs to be careful not to offend the person in charge of Winterfell. At least until that person is not Sansa Stark's brother.
She watches him as he responds and suddenly she wants to know what he is thinking but she doesn't ask. Nodding, she looks away and lets the silence fill the air between them. She had started the conversation but she lets it drop. If he wants to talk some more, he will need to start the conversation again or find another topic.
She wants to ask him who he has waiting in the wings and what alliances he wants to make but she figures that is something she will have to see with her own two eyes.
"You know the Northmen better than I do. Which of them will take the most convincing to support this cause?" He won't ask which be the easiest. He suspects that none of it will be easy, especially with a new King in the North.
Sansa considers his question, going through the list of families that she knows and everything she has learned about them. She gives him a small list then, naming each one in order and giving a small reason why he might have trouble convincing them. It probably isn't something that she should share with him considering she is the sister of the King in the North but it isn't information that he can't find out on his own.
"Those would be the most difficult ones." She finishes, chewing lightly at her bottom lip.
He wouldn't ask her to swear off her loyalty to her brother, and he doesn't expect at this point that she would, but this turned out to be a pretty good test of that loyalty anyway.
"I'll start with those then." Once he's sure of his authority in the Vale.
Studying him, she wonders what he really thinks about the fact that she came with him on this trip but she doesn't ask.
She merely nods. "It will take time but I'm sure that you will figure out a way to bring them to your side. Especially since so many of them hate the South and the Lannisters."
The fact that Cersei Lannister now sits on the throne is something that he could use to his advantage when gathering allies. So too could a few well-placed comments about the harm that he himself had brought to the Lannisters, but since this information could also be used against him, it's something that he'll never mention again. It's far safer for him if everyone blames the wrong person (and motivation, for that matter) for Joffrey's death.
"I don't think I've met a single person yet who truly likes the Lannisters."
Truly, his secret was safe with her. She knows that he probably had a million reasons to kill Joffrey and throw everything into chaos but she likes to think that he did it for her. That he did it for her mother. Everything else really didn't matter so much but she knows to keep that secret to herself. Especially since he is one of her allies and one that she wants to keep close even though she hasn't decided what to do with him yet.
"The Lannisters don't care about being liked. Cersei certainly doesn't and Joffrey didn't." She tucks some hair back from her face before sighing. "I overheard some of the men talking about how Cersei has declared war on the Tyrells and on Dorne. She won't forget us, though."
"It won't be just the Vale who needs allies then." He's sure that as distasteful as Jon will certainly find it for them to continue working together, he'll realize that an alliance between the North and the Vale can be mutually beneficial to both of them.
"Cersei is clearly no longer thinking clearly. She can't really believe that she can beat everyone, can she?" She murmurs, shaking her head slowly as she thinks of the woman. It doesn't really matter if Cersei believes she can beat everyone, though. It's clear that she doesn't care and that makes her more dangerous than before.
"Let me say one thing." She suddenly states, looking at him. "Do not plan to marry me off again. I won't do it this time."
Yes, she knows that he said something about her being at his side but she also hadn't thought he would arrange a marriage for her to someone like Ramsay.
"I have no doubt that she believes that she can beat everyone." He hasn't spent as much time on the Small Council as he did not to have learned a few things about the royal family. The fact that Cersei is the only one of them left now doesn't make a difference. She'll still do whatever it takes to get what she wants.
"That's your brother's concern now, is it not?" He suspects that Jon would get a similar answer from her if he brought it up, but that's Jon's problem now.
"Jon would never ask me to get married." Sansa says with conviction, shaking her head again. "If I ever decide to get married again, I will be choosing my husband."
